Northwest School of Agriculture - Class Champions

Northwestern Minnesota; 20 miles east of East Grand Forks on #2

Years Represented: 1934

Four schools of agriculture in rural Minnesota were sometimes referred to as "Ag schools." Their nicknames were the "Aggies." Four rural schools were located in Grand Rapids, Morris, Waseca and Crookston. A school was also located at the University of Minnesota.

In "Daughters of the Game," the following information was provided: "In Crookston, the Girls Basket Ball Team of 1928 included Clara Ness LaVoi, captain. Her son said that in 1999, his mother, age 91 years, could still dribble her basketball from the Northwest School of Agriculture. The photo includes a handwritten note, "Seventy years ago Grandmother's team could beat the Minnesota Gophers Girls Basketball Team."

In 2006, Larry Bean, Westbrook, MN, attended a program conducted by the book authors, "Daughters of the Game." He sent information about his mother and her basketball days at the Northwest School of Agriculture in 1934.

The photo shows the class teams and an arrow designates the Class Championship team. His mother, Yarmilla (Millie) M. Rybak was a member of the senior class championship team.

In the 1930s, the agriculture schools also dropped their competitive teams and replaced them with intramural/class competition. This practice was observed in high schools and colleges across the state and nation. This type of intramural programs existed until the second era of girls and women's sports began again in Minnesota in the 1960s and 1970s.
