Amelia Earhart - Summers in Worthington
southwestern Minnesota
Years Represented: 1907-1911
In the book, East to the Dawn: The Life of Amelia Earhart, pp. 49-50, we catch another glimpse of Amelia in Minnesota.
At the time, she and her family were living in Des Moines where her father worked for the railroad. In the summers from 1907-1911, the family went to Worthington, Minnesota and spent vacations on the shores of Lake Okabena. They rented rooms at a farm home on the lake belonging to Clinton Mann. Mrs. Twitchell's nearby boarding house provided their meals.
It was a happy time. Amelia was 10-14 yrs of age.
Amelia who loved horses, describing herself as 'obsessed' with riding, rode a horse named Prince, a spirited pony, riding bareback as there was no saddle. Sometimes, she noted, she and her sister ended up walking home. Amelia made cookies for Prince that consisted of grass, covered by a layer of Mrs. Twitchell's sugar cookies, followed by a layer of clover leaves with Prince's name spelled out on top in mulberries.
Amelia had her first ride in a car in Worthington, a Reo.
Amelia and her sister Muriel helped with the haying on the Mann farm, milked cows, fished, swam, played baseball, and tennis on a court in Worthington.
Editor's note: see the photo of Amelia, her sister and unidentified woman playing baseball (probably One Ol' Cat) in the section on Amelia Wore Bloomers...This photo was taken in Worthington, Minnesota.
