Amelia Earhart birthplace

Atchison, Kansas

Years Represented: 1897 to present

Amelia was born in 1897 in her grandparents' home in Atchison, Kansas.

Amelia wrote in her book, The Fun of It, that her grandmother, also named Amelia, was "very lonesome." At the age of three, Amelia..."was lent her for company during the winter months... until the eighth grade." She went home to Kansas City in the summer.

In the book, East to the Dawn, Susan Butler wrote, "There in Atchison Amelia grew up secure of her place, secure of her family's position, nurtured by tradition, and surrounded by friends. Every one of the friends she would mention in later life were the ones she made then, in Atchison, and all would remain her best friends for as long as she lived."

The home is now a museum on Amelia's life.
