The historical booklet, "Canton, Minnesota, 1879-1979," provided information about two of the Canton girls basketball teams in 1912-1913 and 1918-1919.

The section, "Athletics," p. 61, describes the basketball program as follows:

"Athletics have been an integral part of the activities of young people in Canton. Saturday and Sunday afternoon ball games have been favorite pastimes for all generations. Athletics in the high school centered around basketball. During the winter months, both boys and girls basketball were played. Since the first school had no gymnasium, basketball games were held in the Canton Town Hall. Spectators sat on benches which were set up along the side against the wall, on the stage and even above the entry way as there was always a crowd at the games.

On the basketball court the girls wore long dark serge bloomers which gathered at the knee and midi (middy) blouses. Some of the girls who played at this time were: Elva Renne, Mary Snyder, Anna Milne, Marion Wickett and Luella Vail.

In order for the boys basketball team to practice, each player had to pay 10 cents to help defray the expense of renting the town hall. On games nights, the school district would pay the rent from the proceeds.

Girls basketball was discontinued in the middle twenties and therefore boys basketball became the top athletic sport in Canton both in terms of participation and game attendance by the community..."
